This non profit was started by Scott Brown and Family. Scott works for his county’s school nutrition department and had the idea after seeing multiple kids go hungry because of their negative balance. During COVID many schools supplied free lunches to all students. As things got back to normal, there was confusion on when students starting to pay for meals again, this created student debt to increase drastically because of lack of participation in filling out application for free lunch and breakfast for their students.
A Students nutrition debt can follow them from elementary through to high school. Some school districts will not allow a student to attend prom, attend the Homecoming dance or even walk the aisle to graduate if they owe money to school nutrition. Students sometimes go without eating during the school day because they owe money and either believe they cannot eat or are embarrassed to come to the register with the fear of being denied because of an unpaid balance. Forward Lunch assists those students by helping pay off that debt. The charitable funds come from private individuals that want to help students and their facilities that have gotten behind on paying for the students meals while at school. Forward Lunch works with the school district to distribute these funds to the needs of the students.
